Microsoft allows Skype users to make calls directly inside their browsers, but only after they install a certain plugin for that. The great news is that this will change in Microsoft Edge.

The Skype has recently announced that Microsoft Edge will soon support Skype voice and video calls without the user having to download any plugins whatsoever. The new feature will be deployed for Skype for Web and Skype for Outlook.com and we should expect it before the end of this year. Skype said the following

After Skype for Web and Skype for Outlook.com, the feature will be released to Skype for Business users, as well. This is great news and will allow for group video calls with participants all on different browsers and operating systems.

“Today, we’re excited to share the news that the ORTC API preview for Microsoft Edge browser is now available in the latest Windows Insider Preview release! The ORTC APIs enable the development of real-time audio and video communications applications on top of the Microsoft Edge browser, without the need to install any plugins – which means that people using Skype on a browser will be able to get to their conversations faster than ever on Skype for Web and Skype for Outlook.com.”

Skype has a stable share of the free messaging apps market, but there’s always growing pressure from Facebook, WhatsApp and others; so all this makes Microsoft to release new features for Skype.

What do you think about this? Are you happy that you will no longer have to install annoying plugins for Skype voice and video calls to work directly in the browser? Leave your comment below and let us know.
