Microsoft is doing its best to protect customer files in Office 365, but the company could use some help from third party developers who have better solutions to secure content stored and shared through the ecosystem. One example is the new service launched by Vera, which will help Office 365 customers monitor, track, and control how their confidential data is used no matter if it’s stored on SharePoint or OneDrive.

Office 365 is used by over 85 million people in the world who upload their files to SharePoint and OneDrive for Business even if Microsoft can’t offer 100% protection. As a result, there are frequent data breaches. “With the number of organizations and people affected by data breaches snowballing each year, there is a need for next-generation security platforms to become more mainstream and widely adopted in today’s digital economy,” said Duncan Brown, Research Director of European Security Practice at IDC.

Vera is helping Microsoft and its customers avoid data theft by offering a service that will ensure permissions remain associated with files and seamlessly map permissions to Active Directory groups.

Prakash Linga, CTO and Co-founder of Vera, said that “By applying security and permissions to content automatically with Vera’s smart policy engine, we’ve made protecting and tracking sensitive enterprise data simple. User experience is just as critical to enterprise security as strong encryption, especially when accessing information externally. Vera’s new Microsoft integration is our next big step towards making secure collaboration a truly frictionless experience.”

Vera for Microsoft works with any storage, in the cloud or on-premise, will natively secure all data types, will access secure files without installing software, and will secure and access files across Windows, Mac OS, iOS, Android and BlackBerry devices. Pricing isn’t specified on Vera’s official website, but customers can request more details by completing this form.
