Jan 2022 update: Unotelly appears to no longer be offering either Smart DNS or VPN services. The website appears to be down, and it seems likely the service has ceased trading. If you’re looking for a quality VPN to watch Netflix we recommend NordVPN  or ExpressVPN as secure alternatives to Unotelly.

Previously, UnoTelly was a Smart DNS and VPN provider with an emphasis on privacy and security. When it was available, subscribers could use UnoTelly’s services to watch other country’s Netflix catalogs, while traveling abroad.

Does UnoTelly work with Netflix?

No. As soon as Netflix went global and began cracking down on proxy users. Many VPN and DNS proxy providers, including UnoTelly, were blacklisted by Netflix. As a result, users could no longer watch shows while connected to UnoTelly servers.

When it stopped working with Netflix, UnoTelly began marketing itself solely as a privacy service, stating on the home page of its website, “UnoTelly should only be used for privacy protection purposes only. Any other usage is not permitted.” Users who attempted to watch Netflix while connected to UnoTelly, encountered the following error message:

Since then, UnoTelly appears to have shut down its website and closed its doors for business. Presumably, due to losing too many users when it could no longer provide TV accessibility.

Thankfully, not all VPN providers gave into Netflix’s VPN blocks so easily. A handful of providers are still able to consistently access Netflix – at least for US Netflix – and some for many more.

The best VPN alternatives to UnoTelly

In this article, we’ll show you which VPNs still work with Netflix US and how to use them.

Website: www.Surfshark.com

Surfshark is a provider based in the British Virgin Islands that has servers in 65 countries. It is a fast VPN thanks to its WireGuard implementation, and it is one of the few VPNs that work with almost 20 Netflix regions around the world. This makes it one of the best Netflix VPNs available on the market, and it is surprisingly cheap.

The VPN can be installed on an unlimited number of devices. This means you can share your account with friends and family. In addition, it has slid apps for all platforms, so you can stream Netflix on any device you happen to own.

In terms of privacy, the VPN has a solid no logs policy, robust AS encryption, a kill-switch, DNS leak protection, and obfuscation. This makes the service ideal for protecting your data security and privacy whether at home or on public wifi. It even throws in a free Smart DNS service to let you stream on more devices.

Live chat support is available 24/7 and you can test the VPN with Netflix yourself thanks to its 30-day money-back guarantee.

3. ExpressVPN

Website: www.ExpressVPN.com

ExpressVPN works with Netflix US, UK, and Canada. It’s not immediately clear which servers to use as the company doesn’t openly advertise its capabilities so as not to draw undue attention. Subscribers will need to send a message to the 24/7 live chat support on the ExpressVPN website to ask which servers currently work with Netflix.

ExpressVPN also works with the Netflix app if you like to watch on Android or iOS. If you prefer to watch on a device that doesn’t support VPNs, you can opt to use the provider’s MediaStreamer DNS proxy service or a wifi router flashed with ExpressVPN’s custom firmware. This is ideal for devices like Apple TV, PlayStation, Xbox, and Roku.

Apps are available for Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android, Linux, and certain wifi routers.

  • Can only connect 3 devices at once

4. PrivateVPN

Website: www.PrivateVPN.com

PrivateVPN is a relative newcomer to the VPN space, but that hasn’t stopped it from outperforming most of its competition. When it comes to streaming services, PrivateVPN plays in the big leagues. It also works with Hulu, HBO Go, and Prime Video among others. It even works with the mobile apps for both Hulu and Netflix. We recommend contacting the live chat support, available during business hours, to ask which servers currently work with Netflix.

PrivateVPN also shines on the security and privacy side, featuring a no-logs policy and strong encryption. Servers were plenty fast enough to handle HD streaming with no buffering.

Apps are available for Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android.

GREAT SPEEDS:PrivateVPN is a good family choice. Works well with Netflix and allows up to 6 devices on the same account. Fast connections but could do with having more servers to chose from. 30-day money back guarantee.

  • Unblocks Netflix US, UK, and others

  • Strong security and privacy protection features

  • Keeps no logs whatsoever

  • Support staff are good, but only operate during European business hours

5. VyprVPN

Website: www.VyprVPN.com

VyprVPN took a brief hiatus from Netflix after the streaming giant’s global rollout, but it’s now once again able to unblock the site. That means seamless HD streams on a web browser, but not when using the Netflix app for smartphones and tablets. So far as we’ve tested, it only works with Netflix US, but that’s probably what you’re after, anyway.

Like NordVPN, you can purchase a pre-configured router with all of VyprVPN’s servers already set up, or set them up yourself on a router with compatible firmware. This will allow you to connect devices that don’t have native support for VPNs.

VyprVPN offers great speeds and hardened security to keep you streaming with quality and privacy. It owns and operates its own network of over 700 servers across the globe. It’s particularly well suited for users in China, where it’s been able to bypass the Great Firewall censorship system for some years. Note, however, that VyprVPN does log users’ real IP addresses, which might be a privacy concern for some users.

Large server network:VyprVPN is a strong all-purpose VPN. A solid choice for securely accessing Netflix. Stores no logs, offers great security and unblocks most streaming services. More pricey than some. 30-day money-back guarantee.

  • Great for watching localized Netflix Libraries from abroad

  • Streaming speeds were above average in our testing

  • Exceptional security and privacy features

  • Apps are easy to use and have good privacy features

  • Lacking options for advanced configuration

6. Hotspot Shield

Website: www.Hotspotshield.com

Money-back guarantee: 45 DAYS

Editor’s Note: Hotspot Shield is owned by Pango, Comparitech’s parent company.

Hotspot Shield is a popular VPN that is often recommended for streaming. This is because it has a fast proprietary protocol called Catapult Hydra; specifically designed to give users fast speeds. This makes it a good option for watching Netflix, and it is known to provide access to Netflix US and a few other popular international catalogs. It also works with other popular streaming platforms such as Hulu, iPlayer, and Prime Video.

Besing fast makes the VPN suitable for other data-intensive tasks such as torrenting and gaming, but bear in mind that while it is fast, there are faster services recommended above it. This VPN also keeps some connections logs and is based in the USA, so it does av a few caveats.

On the other hand, you do get robust AES encryption and the choice of the OpenVPN protocol for security if you want it. This makes it secure enough for most consumers’ online privacy needs. Finally, you can test it risk-free with its generous 45-day money-back guarantee.

QUICK AND EASY STREAMING:Works to access a choice of Netflix regions, including Netflix US and Netflix UK. Connect up to 5 devices simultaneously. Has a wide range of tools to keep you safe online. Fast connections for torrenting and streaming. 45-day money-back guarantee.

  • Works with Netflix

  • Decent speeds for streaming

  • 24/7 live chat

  • Easy to use

  • No usage logs

  • Based in the US

  • Connection logs kept

I have a VPN. Now what?

Once you’ve signed up and paid for one of the VPN services above, you can start streaming US Netflix by following these instructions:

  • Download and install the VPN app for the device of your choice
  • Log into the app
  • Contact your provider’s customer support if necessary to ask which server works with Netflix US
  • In the VPN app, find the list of servers and connect to the one that can access Netflix
  • Once the connection is established, go to Netflix and start watching!

Netflix still not working? Try this…

Depending on your VPN and device, you might still encounter the Netflix proxy error even if you’re using one of the recommended VPNs above. There could be several reasons for this. Go through this troubleshooting checklist to get things working:

  • Turn off GPS and any other location services on your computer, smartphone, or browser. If you’ve given Netflix permission to view your location in the past, you’ll need to toggle this off in your browser settings.
  • Clear your browser’s cookies, cache, and temp files. Check out our tutorials on how to clear cache and cookies on most types of devices.
  • Disable IPv6. This is particularly useful for Windows 10 users, who can turn off IPv6 in your Wifi Properties within the Network Manager. Afterward, you may need to restart your device.
  • Flush the DNS cache. In Windows, run Command Prompt in Administrator mode and type in: ipconfig /flushdns
  • Log out of any Google accounts, including the one on Chrome browser if you use it. Google caches IP addresses, which can reveal your actual location.
  • Change your device’s time zone to the country’s in which you’re trying to access Netflix. Spain has two time zones: UTC+0 and UTC+1.
  • If you are connected to a wifi network and have access to the router, rename the wifi network (SSID). Append “nomap” at the end (no quotes). For example: “comparitechnomap”. This will opt your wifi network out of Google’s geolocation services. You will need to reconnect your device to the new network in order to regain internet access.

Can I use a free VPN to watch Netflix?

No, it’s very unlikely that you’ll find a free VPN that can securely access Netflix. Circumventing Netflix’s firewall requires a degree of overhead and resources that free VPNs just don’t have. It’s a constant fight to keep working servers up, and free VPNs do not have the means.

At any rate, free VPNs tend to by dodgy and we routinely recommend avoiding them. They often make money by mining their users’ browsing data, inserting ads onto web pages, and/or injecting tracking cookies into users’ web browsers. Free VPNs also tend to have a very limited selection of congested servers that are too slow and unreliable to stream video well.
