Like all technology, Blink cameras are susceptible to issues that can prevent them from functioning to their full capacity. With this in mind, I wanted to learn more about troubleshooting my Blink camera, specifically regarding the “camera busy” error message.
The “camera busy” error with the Blink camera may indicate several issues, including connectivity and recording. Fortunately, there are a few troubleshooting steps to try if you run into this with your Blink system.
Due to the way the cameras communicate and record footage, they may not function correctly in certain conditions. This article will provide potential reasons why your Blink camera is “busy” and some troubleshooting steps to help resolve the issue.
Why is Your Blink Camera Busy?
The “camera busy” issue most commonly occurs when a user is trying to access the device’s live stream features.
When your Blink camera detects motion, it will automatically begin recording footage for 10 to 60 seconds (depending on your settings). As a result, it cannot be accessed while recording, presenting the “camera busy” message.
Recording Motion Events
After a motion event or object has triggered the recording, you will need to wait for the camera to be available again. Many users have indicated that this is a significant drawback for specific scenarios.
For example, if something happens while the device is already recording, you would theoretically be unable to record the new event.
Fortunately, if you find yourself running into this issue often, you can adjust the Blink camera’s “retrigger time” or the time it takes before it is available to record again. In the camera settings, try moving the retrigger time slider to 10 seconds if you’re looking to record more events in a shorter amount of time.
Troubleshooting Steps for Busy Blink Cameras
If your camera is running into issues and doesn’t seem to be busy recording events, don’t worry; there are some helpful troubleshooting steps to try that can resolve connectivity issues.
Blink Camera is Unable to Connect to Sync Module
Blink cameras require a Sync Module to communicate and transmit data. If your camera cannot connect to your Sync Module, you may get the “camera busy” error message. If you find yourself running into issues connecting your devices or if your Sync Module is unable to communicate with your Blink camera, here are a few steps you can try:
- Try moving your camera closer to the Sync Module. Depending on your setup (outdoor vs. indoor), particular objects or devices may be interfering with your camera’s ability to connect to your Sync Module. (Tip: Check the strength of your signal on the connected devices. You’ll want to make sure you have three bars of signal strength for both your Camera’s Wi-Fi and your camera’s connection to the Sync Module.)If the issue persists, you can also try to power cycle your modem and/or router. Simply unplug them for 30 seconds, and then plug them back in. Make sure to wait at least two minutes for the connection to be restored, then verify if the issue has been resolved.
If your Blink camera is still displaying the error message “camera busy,” and you’ve tried the above steps, it may be time to try power-cycling and resetting your devices.
Power Cycle Sync Module and Cameras
Blink cameras communicate wirelessly, and as such, are vulnerable to connectivity issues. Like routers and modems, Blink cameras can be reset in an attempt to resolve these issues as well. Here’s how to power-cycle your Blink camera and Sync Module.
Power Cycle Blink Camera
Power cycling your camera can resolve many issues, and the process only takes about 30 seconds.
- Remove the batteries from the camera (located under the back cover of the device). If the device is hardwired, unplug it from the power source.Wait for 10 seconds before reinserting the batteries and the back cover (or plugging back in if hardwired).Once your camera has powered back on, make sure it’s reconnected to your Sync Module and see if the issue has been resolved.
Note: If you’re using your camera hardwired, make sure there are no batteries inserted in the device, so you can better isolate the issue.
Resetting Sync Module
Suppose your Blink camera has been reset with new batteries or plugged in again, and you’re still unable to connect to your Sync Module. The issue might be with the module itself rather than your camera. Here are some steps to try if you need to reset your Sync Module:
- First, locate the reset button on the right side of the Sync Module (next to the USB port).Using a thin object, press and hold the reset button until the red light indicator illuminates (typically takes between 15 to 30 seconds).Once the Sync Module reboots, it will now be in “Setup Mode.” At this time, you can release the reset button, and you should see a solid green light with a blue flashing light (indicating the device has successfully entered Setup Mode).
After you have followed these steps, you will need to reconnect your Sync Module to your wireless network. For an in-depth guide on reconfiguring your Sync Module, you can check Blink’s support forums here.
In Summary
Blink cameras can provide reliable security monitoring for homeowners in a variety of different scenarios. However, as they communicate wirelessly, they may experience connectivity issues, presenting you with a “camera busy” error (amongst others).
Fortunately, Blink’s intuitive and user-friendly interface makes troubleshooting approachable, designed to get your system back up and running in minutes.
