Even though licensing should be a simple task, some governing users weren’t able to license their SharePoint and were stopped by the “This product key cannot be used to convert SharePoint Server Trial” error.
How to upgrade SharePoint from Trial to Licensed version
Microsoft SharePoint is one of those collaborative intranet tools which uses a subscription-based plan. However, older iterations of SharePoint, just like Microsoft Office, required one-time purchase licensing in order to use them. Users could go with the Trial version for the limited period and after that had to upgrade to a licensed version.
This should be a walk in a park as long as you have a proper license. Just access the central administration menu and open Upgrade and Migration. Once there, just enter the product key and wait for some time until the activation completes. The server must be online and this action won’t cause any downtime.
On the other hand, if you’re met with the “This product key cannot be used to convert SharePoint Server Trial” error, try again and look for improvements.

You can also test the activation process by using an Enterprise Trial key and then try upgrading the product with the purchased one afterward. The Enterprise Trial key differs based on the version of SharePoint you’re running.
