You can enjoy the extended storage space both through the browser, but also on your PC.

More so, you can manage files and folders as if they were on your own hard drive.

However, managing files and folders means moving and deleting them as well, and users have been complaining about an issue regarding this matter.

Apparently this error ( known as error 0x8007016A), happens whenever you try and move or delete files and folders from your OneDrive.

[…]when I click on any individual folder within ‘One Drive’ I get this message: “we can’t open this file right now. Make sure One Drive is running on your PC, then try again.” […] When I try to open an individual file I get error code 0x8007016A The cloud file provider is not running. How do I start it?

How do I prevent error 0x8007016A from happening anymore?

1. Keep your Windows Updated to the latest version

  • Press Windows
  • Click on Settings (the cogwheel-shaped button in the Start Menu)
  • Select Update & Security
  • Click Check for Updates
  • Let the Updates unfold and restart your PC

If this doesn’t fix the OneDrive error 0x8007016A, move on to the next solution.

2. Disable Files on Demand

  • Go to the Taskbar and right-click the OneDrive icon

  • Select More

  • A new window will open where you have to click on the Settings tab

  • Uncheck the Files on Demand service

  • Restart your PC

  • A new window will open where you have to click on the Settings tab

3. Resume file syncing

Issues may be caused by your OneDrive not syncing to the cloud.

As such, follow these steps to resume syncing your data:

  • Access OneDrive from the taskbar by clicking it
  • Select More
  • Click on Resume Syncing

4. Modify your PC’s power plan (only applies to laptops)

This particular solution ties into the one mentioned above, as restrictive battery-saving plans may sometimes stop OneDrive from syncing.

As such, try to modify your powerplay so that it will no longer stop auto-syncing.

  • Press Windows + R
  • Type in powercfg.cpl
  • Change your power plan to High Performance
  • Restart your PC

5. Reset OneDrive

The solution to end all solutions would be to reset your OneDrive.

  • Press Windows + R
  • Type in %localappdata%MicrosoftOneDriveonedrive.exe /reset

In a matter of seconds, your OneDrive will be reset, and you will lose all user preferences stored, but not the files and folders saved on it.

6. Remove the glitched folder by force using PowerShell

This method works best if there is only one folder that causes the 0x8007016A error

  • Press Windows + R

  • Type in powershell, and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open a PowerShell window

  • Type in Remove-Item “OneDrive folder name” -Recurse -Force to completely delete the glitched file or folder.

  • Replace “OneDrive folder name” with the name of the file or folder you wish to delete

  • Restart your PC

  • Replace “OneDrive folder name” with the name of the file or folder you wish to delete
