Following the removal of the Over-The-Top (OTT) tax, the government of Uganda introduced a new 12% Excise Duty on internet data effective 1st July 2021.
Smile communications Uganda is pleased to inform their valued customer, that we will pay the new 12% tax at no cost to you (subject to future review), and the current pricing of data bundles will not change.
This comes as no surprise as Smile Uganda was among a handful of telcos that absorbed and paid the mandatory OTT tax on behalf of their customers as well 3 years ago.
At such a time when we are striving to survive the covid-19 pandemic, absorbing this new tax will enable customers to connect with friends and family and conveniently work from home.

And this will also support children with online studies, deliver daily tasks online, and enjoy their favorite entertainment without limitation.
How to Buy Smile Data in Uganda?
Smile communications are only one of the telcos that have a wide option for their customers to buy their data, voice bundles, or airtimes.
Option One: You can buy Smile data bundles, voice, and airtime through their dedicated mobile app “MySmile“. The app is available for download on both iOS and Google Play Store. All you have to do is log in with your account details and your good to go.
Option Two: Through the web portal. Smile communications Uganda has a web portal where you buy data and all related bundles. The biggest upside with using this web channel is you can make payments using Credit/Debit cards plus mobile money. Login to your account, choose the bundle option you would like and choose your method of payment to finish out the transactions.
Option Three: Through the *252# USSD code on MTN and Airtel networks. The USSD shortcode allows users to buy airtime and data bundles to any mobile network in the country. We have discussed earlier in our previous article a step by step instructions on how you can buy and finish the transactions.
The 12% excise duty tax makes the cost of internet and buying data bundles across the country high and Smile Uganda’s effort to look out for their customers is deeply appreciated.
