Slack Users Can Now Make Voip Calls

When it comes to communicating with a team via the internet, Slack is one of the best services to do so, boasting robust messaging and file sharing functionality. Things are about to get even better: the company recently added VOIP calls to its hugely popular app.

Slack has been beta testing the feature for the past couple months, and now the company is ready to release for public consumption. The idea here is to have the feature available for both users on the desktop and mobile; still, there might be some slight differences in the experience.

According to the company, the voice calling feature will be supported on the Mac, PC, iOS, and Android. Unfortunately, there’s no word of it coming to Windows 10 Mobile, though anything possible and folks should understand that Microsoft’s mobile operating system tends to always play second fiddle.

At the end of the day, Slack has a long way to go because it still lacks some key features found in competing products. For example, it is not possible for a user to share his or her screen with the one team member, or the entire team for that matter. Skype has had this for years and although it is not perfect, it is good enough.

Typing is great. We love typing. And while there are many fine ways to communicate via typing — messaging in channels, direct messages, and group DMs — today we’re officially adding calls to the mix for everyone.

After months of beta testing, all Slack users everywhere can now use our calls feature. Huzzah!

Earlier this year, the Slack beta app was released to the Windows Store for Windows 10. Months after, Microsoft released an update for Skype that fixed the continuous ringing bug.
